SPACE AVAILABLE TRAVEL RULES We've recently received several inquiries about Space A travel. In an attempt to clarify the rules, the following is offered: Members of the National Guard and Reserve are authorized to use Space Available Travel, or "Space-A Travel" on military aircraft for destinations within the continental United States (CONUS), and between CONUS and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S, Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa. Active status members must present a valid Military Identification Card and a completed DD Form 1853, "Authentication of Reserve Status for Travel Eligibility" to secure Space-A Travel. Your unit will issue you a DD Form 1853 on request. Dependents of Reservists cannot fly Space A unless the reservist is serving in AGR status. Dependent travel is not authorized until the retired military sponsor reaches age 60. Retirees (either grey area or over age 60), and family members of retirees accompanied by their sponsor may fly Space A. National Guard, Reservists, and Retirees are able to fly Space A under Category
VI, the lowest priority after duty passengers, EML, active duty, and emergency
leave. REF: DOD 4515.13-R Some recommended Space A travel sites on the web: Military Space Available Travel Doug Oard

FREE LAWN CARE FOR DEPLOYED TROOPS' FAMILIES A national nonprofit organization is mobilizing lawn and landscape companies to provide free lawn care for families of service members who deploy to the Middle East. More than 1,000 companies around the country have signed up for GreenCare for Troops Serving You While You Serve Us since it began May 22, said Katherine Brandenburg, a spokeswoman for Project EverGreen, whose mission is to promote healthy landscapes and green spaces. mowing, aeration and grub control. A variety of services will be available depending on the area of the country, she said. About 100 families have signed up for the free service. If a family signs up for the services in an area where a contractor has not volunteered, Brandenburg said, they will contact local companies to try to help them. While they cannot guarantee there will be a local contractor who has volunteered to help the family, they will do their best to link up families with a contractor. This was inspired by one of our contractors in upstate New York who offers this program, Brandenburg said, in an effort to ease the stress on families left behind when the service member deploys. Military families incur no cost or obligation for applying, she said. Interested families should log on to the Web site and complete an application that asks for name, e-mail address, daytime phone number and address. Families can also call toll-free 877-758-4835 to have an application
mailed.
